If mold is in your home, what is the best step?

ANSWER: 4 step Estimate

1. ASSESSMENT: In depth "pre-remediation" evaluation of the infected area to identify the cause of the mold.

2. PREPARATION OF YOUR HOME:

A. Containment and isolation of the infected area to prevent spread of mold spores to other areas of your home.
B. Containment is setup with negative air pressure; this is the MOST IMPORTANT PRECAUTION TO REMOVING MOLD, by preventing the spread of mold spores during work.

3. CLEAN YOUR HOME: Remove the source of contamination, dry, HEPA vacuum and sanitize non-porous materials and surfaces.

4. AFTER THE PROJECT: Follow-up with a certificate of completion and consultation on prevention steps.

The Key Is Moisture Control

When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they can begin growing at a rapid rate. Molds can grow almost anywhere -- on wood, paper, carpets, and foods.

When excessive moisture or water accumulates indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed.

There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

If you have a mold problem in your home, here are some basic mold cleanup tips:

1. The key to mold control is moisture control.

2. It is important to dry water damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

3. If mold is a problem in your home, clean up the mold and get rid of the excess water or moisture. Fix leaky plumbing or other sources of water.

4. If the mold growth covers more than 10 square feet, then a professional should be consulted.

5. Wash mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.

6. Absorbent materials (such as ceiling tiles & carpet) that become moldy may have to be replaced.

Keep in mind that toxic molds need to be handled by professionals. If you suspect toxic mold, get out of the house immediately and have it professionally tested. Your health could be at risk.
